Lake Stewardship is the practice of managing our lakes through preventative and/or remedial actions to safeguard the ecological health of our lakes for future generations. Stewardship is about citizens and stakeholders taking action and steering grassroots lake planning and implementation of actions that help protect water quality.
Currently there are 35 lake stewardship groups in the city of Greater Sudbury.
Why are Lake Stewardship Groups important?
- To be the voice of your lake.
- To develop a communications network for sharing lake news.
- To raise awareness of lake issues in the community.
- To launch fund-raising events.
- To act as a support group for members.
- To gain strength in numbers.
- To gather information and educational materials for the members.
- To conduct data collection on a broad range of lake concerns (water quality, development, lake use conflicts).
- To gain a historical perspective from long-time residents (i.e Fairbank Lake Cottagers Association).
- To network with other lake organizations.
